THE COWARDS OF OZ

Had it not been for the gracious and sporting support of a majority of Australian cricket lovers towards the Indian Cricket team, I would have attempted to trace the lineage of several of the Aussie cricketers to Botany Bay and the Freemantle Prison. While the cricketing prowess of the Aussies without any doubt is exceptional, the same cannot be said about their on-field behaviour.Having steam-rollered most cricket playing countries in tests and one-dayers, the Aussies had inflated their egos to such an extent that sledging and using abusive language on field seemed to be their birthright. In the second test at Sydney when things went awry after the Indian first innings lead, despite dubious decisions by the umpire, the Aussies resorted to what they do best - heckling, sledging and the works. A pity and a shame, considering the talent that they have in their team.

ANNUAL MOLESTATION CELEBRATIONS IN MUMBAI

Just like last year , Mumbai ushered in 2008 , by molesting two women on a crowded street. The major share of the blame, justifiably falls on the Mumbai Police for failing to maintain a stricter vigil. But I feel that this is too simplistic an approach. Every part of the city cannot be watched over when there are inebriated revellers all around. A large share of the blame has to be apportioned to the citizens, who just stood and watched the spectacle without offering to help. Some would say that it was foolhardy for the women and their male escorts to venture walking on the streets at that time of the night, that too in revealing dresses better reserved for safer surroundings such as the hotel that they had just emerged out of. If nothing, it once again brings to fore the fact that are streets are not safe for women.

THE POLITICAL CHILD

The slain leader of Pakistan, Mrs Benazir Bhutto, had in her will asserted that the responsibility of leading the Pakistan Peoples Party be taken over by her husband Mr. Asif Ali Zardari. For reasons best known to him and the Party, he has further passed on the mantle to his nineteen year old son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. All talk of democratic values get negated when such acts of dynastic 'selection' takes place. The senior leaders of the party are also to share the blame who in their quest to garner sympathy votes, in the wake of the terrible assasination have succumbed to un-democratic ways.
